(NYSE: USU) and Pinnacle West Capital Corporation (NYSE: PNW) today announced the companies have entered into an agreement under which USEC will acquire NAC International (NAC), a leading provider of spent fuel storage solutions, nuclear materials transportation and fuel cycle consulting.

Norcross, Georgia — NAC International (NAC) has recognized a significant milestone this month in the loading of the one-hundredth multipurpose canister system of its UMS and MPC technologies. Fittingly, the 99th and 100th systems were loaded at almost the same time, with a UMS system loaded at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station and an MPC system loaded at the decommissioned Connecticut Yankee plant. NAC is the first cask supplier to achieve this “First Century” loading mark for concrete-based multipurpose canister systems (MCS).

Norcross, Georgia — NAC International (NAC) has completed delivery ahead of schedule of the final set of UMS transportable storage canisters to the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company’s Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) at the Maine Yankee plant site. This essentially completes NAC’s hardware delivery commitments to Maine Yankee, and paves the way for the final transfer of all spent fuel from the plant’s spent fuel pool into dry storage at the ISFSI using NAC’s UMS system. "The last phases of this project, as we moved toward completion, have demonstrated the resolve and determination of both Maine Yankee and NAC to meet our mutual and collective objectives. It has been a significant undertaking by both parties, in that a challenging schedule was established in February for completion and we have actually accomplished our objectives ahead of that schedule," said Pete Walier, NAC President & CEO.

Norcross, Georgia — NAC International (NAC) has completed delivery of two NAC-STC transportation casks under a contract with a Beijing, China-based consortium of three Chinese companies—Everclean Environmental Engineering Corp. CNNC (EEEC), China Nuclear Energy Industry Corporation (CNEIC) and Guangdong Nuclear Power Joint Venture Company (GNPJVC). The contract includes the design, licensing and fabrication of two NAC-STC transportation casks, fuel baskets, transportation skids, impact limiters and lifting yokes, plus on-site training and operational support for the first use. Equipos Nucleares, S.A. (ENSA) manufactured the casks at its fabrication facility near Santander, Spain.

Norcross, Georgia —NAC International (NAC) recently completed significant upgrades to its transportation program’s capabilities, equipment and procedures to make it ICM (interim compensatory measure) compliant. The modifications were necessary to meet more stringent requirements imposed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for transport of spent nuclear fuel following the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Norcross, Georgia —NAC International (NAC) has completed the Yankee Rowe “Pool-to-Pad” project for Yankee Atomic Electric Company at the plant in Rowe, Mass. The contract called for NAC to design, license and supply an interim dry cask storage system for spent nuclear fuel at the shutdown Yankee Rowe plant. NAC responded with 16 of its multipurpose canister systems—15 NAC-MPCs for spent fuel and one for greater-than-class-C (GTCC) waste.

Norcross, Georgia —NAC International (NAC) announces that its operations at Charlotte, N.C.-based, Duke Power's McGuire Nuclear Station remain solidly ahead of schedule. The contracted delivery for the first Universal Multi-Purpose Canister System (UMS) at McGuire was fall 2003, with loading operations scheduled to begin in spring 2004.

ATLANTA —Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company (MYAPC) and NAC International have entered into a new business arrangement that better meets the needs of the MYAPC decommissioning project and NAC. Under this new arrangement, MYAPC will more directly manage fuel transfer work on the site while NAC continues to provide its dry cask system as well as its proprietary equipment and knowledge.
