NAC delivered and supported loading of its versatile NAC-LWT cask to successfully transport a shipment of TRIGA fuel from the FiR research reactor in Finland to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Research Reactor in Denver, Colorado. The used fuel from the FiR reactor was discharged before its intended useful life and was partially depleted. Transport of this fuel to the USGS reactor makes it possible to productively utilize its residual energy content. Well-qualified NAC personnel and all supporting cask equipment were mobilized to the FiR site, operated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd (VTT), to complete the cask loading over the December 2020 holidays. The shipment was successfully unloaded at the USGS facility in January 2021. VTT’s press release is provided here.
