NAC International Selected as a Subrecipient in DOE ARPA-E SCALEUP Project to Advance the Universal Canister System and Deep Borehole Disposal
April 14, 2026
Peachtree Corners, GA – NAC International announced today that it is a key partner on a team selected for the U.S. Department of Energy’s ARPA-E SCALEUP Award, supporting advancement of the Universal Canister System (UCS) and deep borehole disposal technology.
NAC International is participating alongside Deep Isolation (lead company), Westinghouse, Halliburton, Occlusion Nuclear Solutions, and Amentum. NAC International’s scope of work for the project includes:
This project will position NAC International as the licensee, and lead fabricator of Deep Isolation’s UCS — the world’s first triple-purpose canister, designed for storage, transportation, and disposal in either a deep borehole repository or a mined repository.
The SCALEUP program bridges the gap between pilot-scale demonstration and full commercial deployment by providing funding and support to validate first-of-a-kind energy technologies. The award enables full-scale field testing of the UCS, including regulatory validation and demonstration of deep borehole disposal using a non-radioactive commercial pilot in Cameron, Texas. SCALEUP Ready is ARPA-E’s initiative to accelerate technologies toward market adoption and has committed up to $40 million to support two projects, including this Deep Isolation led project. The UCS SCALEUP project advances critical national priorities supporting Executive Order 14302, which directs the Department of Energy to strengthen U.S. nuclear energy leadership and develop permanent solutions for spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste.
The project aligns directly with ARPA-E’s mission to improve radioactive waste management and maintain U.S. technological leadership in advanced energy technologies.
The project brings together a world-class project team, including Deep Isolation, Westinghouse, NAC International (TYO: 7004), Halliburton (NYSE: HAL), Occlusion Nuclear Solutions, Amentum (NYSE: AMTM), and the Deep Borehole Demonstration Center, to demonstrate a fully integrated and permanent solution for advanced reactor and nuclear recycling waste.
About NAC International

NAC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kanadevia Corporation, a global leader in design and construction of environmental systems, industrial plants, industrial machinery, process equipment, infrastructure-related equipment, disaster prevention systems, and precision machinery.
NAC International is participating alongside Deep Isolation (lead company), Westinghouse, Halliburton, Occlusion Nuclear Solutions, and Amentum. NAC International’s scope of work for the project includes:
- Further development of the UCS design through U.S. NRC licensing for storage and transportation in NAC’s MAGNASTOR® and MAGNATRAN® with Westinghouse eVinci™ fuel as an approved content.
- Design and fabrication of surface handling equipment to support a non-radioactive Deep Borehole Demonstration in Cameron, Texas.
- Support to Deep Isolation and Westinghouse in the design of an Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) facility for eVinci fuel, integrating Deep Isolation’s UCS with NAC’s established storage and transportation technologies.
This project will position NAC International as the licensee, and lead fabricator of Deep Isolation’s UCS — the world’s first triple-purpose canister, designed for storage, transportation, and disposal in either a deep borehole repository or a mined repository.
