Doosan Enerbility Teams with NAC International to Win Used Fuel Storage Design Work for KHNP
November 7, 2023
Peachtree Corners, GA, November 7, 2023 – Doosan Enerbility Co., Ltd. (Doosan Enerbility), teamed with NAC International Inc. (NAC), was awarded a contract from Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) to perform overall design and regulatory certification in the Republic of Korea of spent nuclear fuel storage systems.
In its work for KHNP, the Doosan Enerbility team will be completing the design work for a dry storage system for the Korean market utilizing a Doosan / NAC jointly developed dry cask storage system based on NAC’s MAGNASTOR® dry cask storage system technology. The system for KHNP will include the MAGNASTOR Metal Storage Overpack (MSO) option for highly efficient storage of used nuclear fuel in transportable storage canisters, as licensed in 2023 by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The design and certification scope also includes a cask for transporting spent nuclear fuel in transportable storage canisters. Doosan Enerbility and NAC worked under a technology cooperation agreement to develop the dry cask storage system for applicability to spent fuel storage in Korea. The two companies have also partnered for delivery of spent fuel storage systems; Doosan Enerbility has fabricated MAGNASTOR systems now in use at NAC project sites in the U.S.

“We congratulate Doosan Enerbility on their successful contract award from KHNP and look forward to working on their team to provide design services for spent fuel storage at Korean nuclear power plant sites. This award represents over eight years of teamwork and collaboration between NAC and Doosan Enerbility to develop nuclear fuel storage technology for international applications,” said Kent Cole, NAC President and CEO.
NAC’s leading-edge MAGNASTOR system (U.S. Patent No. 8,630,384 B2) is the first ultra-high-capacity canister system installed at PWR commercial nuclear power plants. To date, 230 PWR MAGNASTOR systems have been loaded and are in service safely storing spent fuel at operating and shutdown sites.
