CHARLOTTE, N.C. – AREVA Inc and NAC International (NAC), two global leaders in used nuclear fuel storage, have signed an agreement to jointly support the licensing, design, construction and operation of the Consolidated Interim Storage Facility (CISF) project in Andrews County, Texas, led by Waste Control Specialists, LLC (WCS).

The new agreement ensures that the WCS facility can handle the majority of com-mercial used nuclear fuel and reactor-related GTCC waste already in dry storage at shutdown and operating sites in the U.S., while also leveraging the companies’ ex-pertise in used nuclear fuel transportation. Additional systems can be added through future license amendments.

“We welcome the opportunity to work with NAC during the licensing phase of this project,” said Mike McMahon, senior vice president and CISF project director for AREVA Inc. “NAC’s participation complements AREVA’s experience and capabilities, further strengthening WCS’ ability to deliver to our nation a solution consistent with the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future.”

In February 2015, WCS filed a letter of intent with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to seek a license for the CISF at their 14,000-acre facility in Andrews, Texas. Following that submission, WCS entered into an agreement for AREVA Inc. to serve as the exclusive subcontractor to license, construct and operate the CISF.

“NAC is pleased to join with AREVA to support WCS’s efforts to deploy a consolidated interim storage facility based on proven technology and experience,” said Kent Cole, president and CEO of NAC. “We are proud to provide a viable solution to the industry’s need for a safe, secure storage location for used nuclear fuel. Furthermore, we believe that our participation will cement the team’s leadership in storage, transport and management of used fuel, which are key success attributes when implementing a nuclear facility of this kind.”

Combined, AREVA and NAC represent 62 percent of existing dry storage systems in the U.S., including 78 percent of used nuclear fuel stored at sites where there is no longer an operating nuclear facility.

NAC International (NAC) is an industry-leading provider of engineering, consulting and nuclear fuel management and transportation.
